Magura in the glorious war of liberation

Magura has a glorious history in the war of independence of Bangladesh. After 9 long months of killing and torturing the Pak army and their allies, Magura was liberated on 7 December 1971. The flag of independent Bangladesh flew in the sky. The glorious story of the liberation war is briefly highlighted:

Pak army entry:

 The Pak army and militia came to Magura at the end of March 1971. The first martyr in Magura was a madman of the city. When he saw the Pak army and called it Joy Bangla, the invaders shot and killed him. Jagbandhu Dutt, a prominent businessman of the city, was shot dead in his house by the Pak army. Al-Badr Alsams, an accomplice of the Pak army, set fire to various temples including the Kali temple in the city and vandalized the idols. They set fire to various markets and houses in the district.

 Base of the invaders

 Pak Army set up bases at PTI, Government Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Government Boys High School, Ansar Camp, Dakbangla in Magura town. The Razakars and the Peace Committee set up their offices by occupying the Golden Pharmacy building, Renuka building, Jagbandhu Dutt's house, Chowdhury's house in the city. In these places they used to capture freedom fighters and common people and kill them after torture. The Pak army built a temporary runway behind the PTI.

Base of freedom fighters

The office of the struggle committee was opened in a huge pucca tin house of Ansar Campus at Nomani Maidan in Magura town. While sitting here, Advocate Ashaduzzaman used to control the activities of the Magura Region Prevention and Struggle Committee including telephone communication with other district subdivisions. Add from the control room set up in the SDO office. Nasirul Islam Abu Mia, along with his colleague Abu Zoha Pikul (athlete and playwright) from Magura, maintained contact with other parts of the country. Members of the EPR, police, army and Ansar forces, who had come home on holiday, were gathered at various places in Magura. The firearms and ammunition of Magura Police Lines were handed over to them. Magura Nomani Maidan, Sarkari Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy College Grounds, Parnanduali Sheikhpara Mango Garden etc. started training the interested students. By collecting chemicals from the science laboratories of different schools and colleges in Magura, hand grenades were made in the secluded place of Khudiram Saha Mango Garden in the city under the supervision of the then student leaders Abu Naser Bablu and Kamruzzaman Chand. The explosives were delivered to a resistance camp around Magura.

Slaughterhouses and mass graves

Hundreds of people were killed by Pak army and razakars at Wapda Barrage, Canal, PTI in Magura. They killed many people in PTI and buried them. The Pak army had set up base at Dak Bungalow in Arpara. After capturing and killing the freedom fighters and the common people on the way to the boat by the river Fatki, Dak used to throw them in an idara in the bungalow premises. There are mass graves of 13 freedom fighters in six gharias, 6 freedom fighters in Hazrahati and 6 mass graves of freedom fighters in Talkhari. The assailants captured Lutfur Nahar Helena, a teacher at a government girls' school, and tortured her in a medieval manner. They tied this progressive woman with a rope behind the jeep and dragged her all over the city of Magura to death. On the morning of 26 November, the Pak army shot dead 26 freedom fighters who were sleeping in the house of Madhab Chandra Kundu in Kamanna village. All of them live in Hajipur of Magura and its surrounding villages. Razakars brutally tortured 13 freedom fighters in six houses and 6 freedom fighters in Hazrahati.

 Frontal battle: There were several frontal battles of the freedom fighters with the Pak army and their allies in Magura. Among these the battles of Mohammadpur Upazila Sadar, Binodpur Battle, Jayrampur Battle etc. are notable. A number of freedom fighters including Ahmed and Mohammad (two brothers), Abir Hossain and Mukul were martyred in these battles.

Akbar's forces:

 Akbar Hossain Mia, a freedom fighter from Tupi Para village in Sreepur upazila, formed a group of freedom fighters 'Akbar Bahini'. Akbar Hossain was the commander of this party and Mollah Nabuwat Ali, the current commander of the district Muktijoddha Sangsad, was its deputy commander. These forces humiliated the Pak army in various wars. Magura was liberated from the enemy: After the liberation of Jessore on 6 December, the Pak army came to Magura and took shelter. But the Pak army could not withstand the joint attack of the freedom fighters and the allied forces and started fleeing from Magura from that afternoon. At night they crossed the Gorai river and fled towards Kamarkhali in Faridpur. On the morning of 6 December, the freedom fighters took control of Magura. The flag of independent Bangladesh flew in Magura. Everywhere Joy became vocal in Bengali sound. Allied General Jagjit Singh Aurora arrived at Nomani Maidan in Magura by helicopter and exchanged greetings with all.

Magura is free from enemies:

After the liberation of Jessore on 6 December, the Pak army came to Magura and took refuge. But the Pak army could not withstand the joint attack of the freedom fighters and the allied forces and started fleeing from Magura from that afternoon. At night they crossed the Gorai river and fled towards Kamarkhali in Faridpur. On the morning of 6 December, the freedom fighters took control of Magura. The flag of independent Bangladesh flew in Magura. Everywhere Joy became vocal in Bengali sound. Allied General Jagjit Singh Aurora arrived at Nomani Maidan in Magura by helicopter and exchanged greetings with all.

Battlefield Spokesperson:

 During the war of liberation, Magura journalist Deepak Roy Chowdhury published a newspaper called "Banglar Dak" from Mujibnagar, the provisional capital of the expatriate government of Bangladesh. The newspaper was printed from a press in the Ranaghat subdivision of India and reached the freedom fighters. The newspaper used to publish the success stories of the freedom fighters on the battlefield.

Organizers of the Liberation War:

 Magura subdivision Awami League president Syed Atar Ali, the organizer of the liberation war, died in India during the liberation war. He was brought to Bangladesh and buried. Awami League leader, former minister Sohrab Hossain, former MP late Advocate Ashaduzzaman, former sub-divisional administrator Oliul Islam and others played the role of organizers of the liberation war
