Background of district administration

Jessore was declared as the first district in the experimental province of Bengal in India in 1781. The Magura region then belonged to Jessore district. In 1845 Magura was first established as a subdivision under Jessore district. Although a subdivision was established, a police station was established at Magura Sadar much later, in 1855. However, Shalikha police station was established earlier. From 1781 to 1845, the area was known as Magura.

Mr. Corkburn was the first subdivisional magistrate after the establishment of Magura subdivision. Kirkburn was the first to build the Magura subdivision building. The first administrative building of Magura subdivision was located on the north side adjacent to the office of the present Superintendent of Police, Magura. The building was 123 cubits long and 16 cubits wide, with a porch facing south. The subdivision town was formed in the vicinity of this office. Later, for the convenience of administrative work, the office of the Sub-Divisional Administrator was shifted and relocated to its present location on the east side of College Road in 1986 by the Pak Government under the tenure of Sub-Divisional Administrator Md. Fazlul Hasan Yusuf CSP. For more than three decades after the relocation, the former subdivisional office, known as the Old Court Building, was reminiscent of the past. The office building, which had been abandoned for a long time, housed more than one office. Until 1974, all the sub-divisional administrative activities were conducted in this one-storey building and after the Magura sub-division was upgraded to a district on March 1, 1984, this office of the sub-divisional administrator became the office of the deputy commissioner. In 1984, Mr. Arvind Kar was the first Deputy Commissioner of Magura. Since 1984, 21 Deputy Commissioners have performed their duties with reputation and efficiency. Later, in 1997, work on the Deputy Commissioner's Office building started in front of the old office building. When the new building was constructed in 2002, the activities of the administration were shifted to the new three-storey building and all the activities of the district administration are being conducted from here till date.

History of naming: There are various differences among the historians regarding the naming of Magura. According to many, a Mugh pirate named Dharmadas settled in the area adjacent to the Madhumati river near Magura. The people of the area were outraged by the oppression of the Maghs and they were expelled. The name 'Magura' originates from that mug and morga. 2. According to the historian Abul Kalam Samsuddin, the author of the book "The Early Period of Khulna City", the name Magura originates from the Dead Ganges. Mara Gang is commonly known as Morga in the regional language. 3. However, it is still rumored that a large number of Magur fish could be found in the Magura canal at one time. And from the fame of that Magur fish, it has been named "Magura"
